Rohee urges police to do more to address domestic, youth violence

Acting Police Commissioner Leroy Brummel addressing the graduates

Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee last Friday urged members of the Guyana Police Force to do more at their respective divisions to address the growing concerns of domestic abuse and youths in violent crimes. Rohee at the time was delivering the feature address at the conclusion of a Junior Officers’ course at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe, Eve Leary.
The minister, who has been outspoken about the shortcomings of the force, said recently crime was on the increase and requires the urgent attention of members of the force.
Among the concerns he noted are two dominant cases: domestic violence and youth involvement in violent crimes. According to him, these have been given top priority in his ministry. Against this background, Rohee established that more needs to be done at every level of the force to address these problems.
While it is his belief that domestic violence is a part of a social problem which cannot be denied, the minister at the same time holds the view that the force can play a major role in addressing the problems through a legal framework.
One of the commendable initiatives that has been taken by the force to curb youth violence was the formation of youth clubs and scout groups. Rohee urged the graduates to take up the challenge to continue this initiative by initiating the formation of more youth clubs and scout groups as this will benefit not only the force but society at large.

The junior officers entertaining the gathering

According to him, it has shown that the leaders of the force have realised the importance of police officers being exposed to indispensable knowledge and skills.
Rohee said invariably, at the end of training courses, there is a tendency of the participants to overlook the contributions made by the facilitators, and urged the graduates not to become victims of this problem. He went on to explain that whenever training courses are undertaken by the force, financial expenses must be considered and weighed against the benefits. Nevertheless, he believes that the junior officer course has achieved its intended goals, noting that the participants are more capable in leading their respective units with the skill and comprehensions imparted unto them by the various facilitators.
